RE: Cate School’s Installation of a Diesel-fired Emergency Generator

Cate School has applied to the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (APCD) for a permit to install and operate an emergency/standby diesel generator at 1960 Cate Mesa Road in Carpinteria, the site of Cate School. This equipment will provide emergency power for Cate School in the event of a power outage. In addition, the school may conduct engine maintenance or testing operations for, at most, two hours per day, and no more than 50 total hours per year.

As part of the APCD’s evaluation of this proposed installation, we have used a state-approved computer model to assess the potential health risk created by the project’s emissions. Our modeling analysis, which is conservatively health protective, shows that the expected emissions from this installation will be well below any levels that would create a significant air toxic risk to public health and the environment. Before our agency issues this permit, state law requires that we notify you, since you are either the parent/guardian of a student attending the school or are a resident or business located within 1,000 feet of the site. We are providing you an opportunity to review and comment on this proposed permitting action. Further, prior to issuing the final permit, we will submit to the permit’s administrative file our written responses to any comments we receive during the comment period.

A copy of the draft permit document (Authority to Construct/Permit to Operate 12040) is available for review at the following locations: APCD offices (260 North San Antonio Rd, Suite A, Santa Barbara); Santa Barbara Public Library: Santa Barbara Branch (40 E. Anapamu, Santa Barbara); and you can download the draft permit document (PDF file) by clicking here.

Please provide any comments to us within 30 days of the receipt of this notice at the address below (Attn: Kaitlin Ergun, 961-8855).

Sincerely,

Peter Cantle, Manager
