Pollution Prevention Week 2001:
Making a Green Difference

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, CA – The greendifference.org coalition of county agencies and organizations today announced celebration of national Pollution Prevention Week from September 17 through September 23. This year, the group, led by Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (APCD) and the Community Environmental Council (CEC), suggests we all:

  • Protect our creeks and ocean by not hosing or dumping waste in the street, gutters, or storm drains.
  • Buy materials that we can recycle, and recycle more.
  • Save energy (and money) by installing compact fluorescent lightbulbs, plugging energy leaks, and adjusting the thermostat.
  • Share a ride, take the bus, ride a bike, or telecommute.
  • Dispose of used oil, paint, and other hazardous materials properly.
  • Save water by planting drought-tolerant plants, installing low-flow toilets and showerheads, and fixing leaks.

The greendifference.org coalition is sponsoring an advertising campaign during Pollution Prevention Week, and promoting a website, www.greendifference.org, to provide information on how people can make a green difference.

During Pollution Prevention Week, APCD’s interactive kiosk R2P2 (the Robot Resource for Pollution Prevention) will visit the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History (staying there through December). The Green Award winners will also be announced during Pollution Prevention Week. Sponsored by CEC, APCD, Traffic Solutions, Santa Barbara County Water Agency, and Santa Barbara County Solid Waste and Utilities Division, the Green Awards recognize companies and organizations for outstanding efforts in reducing or preventing pollution.
